Wildlife protection and conservation is important to us at Southcombe with excess of 25% of the farm being assigned to the DEFRA Countryside Stewardship Scheme. This part of the farm has also been designated an area of high conservation value by Devon Wildlife Trust and has been featured on the Radio 4 programme 'Open Country'.
This area is mostly unique Culm Grassland which has its own complex ecosystem, supporting many rare and endangered plants and animals.
With the assistance of Devon Wildlife Trust we have enabled controlled access to this land exclusively for our guests. This is by way of a marked farm trail complete with picnic area and hide for wildlife watching. This provides a pleasurable experience for anyone interested in wildlife, conservation or just the peace and quiet of the countryside.
